Role in conflict
Israel views Iran's nuclear programme and regional proxy network as an existential threat and has conducted documented sabotage, cyber, and air operations targeting Iranian and Iran-aligned assets across Iran, Syria, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Its security posture combines US-backed deterrence, an internal multi-layer air-defence network (Iron Dome, David's Sling, Arrow), and willingness to act unilaterally when red lines are crossed. The Mossad, IDF Intelligence Directorate, and Air Force are the principal operational instruments.
Objectives
- Prevent an Iranian nuclear weapon by any necessary means
- Degrade Iran's regional proxy network, especially Hezbollah's precision missile and drone arsenal
- Maintain US security guarantees and weapons access
- Normalisation with Gulf states where possible (Abraham Accords framework)
- Strategic depth via dominant ISR and strike capability
Red lines
Iranian nuclear weapon
Stated red line of decades' standing; declaratory threshold for preventive action.
Hezbollah precision-guided munitions
Sustained build-up of high-accuracy Hezbollah missiles is treated as casus belli.
Mass-casualty attack from any front
Triggers retaliation up the escalation ladder.
Constraints
- Multi-front threat geometry (Lebanon, Gaza, West Bank, Syria, Yemen, Iran)
- Domestic political fragmentation over war aims and security policy
- International legal and diplomatic pressure on civilian-harm metrics
- Munitions resupply dependence on US production capacity
