The United States has sent a 15-point peace plan to Iran and requested a month-long ceasefire, according to reports. In a move that signals the Trump administration’s eagerness to find an way out of the conflict amid rising oil prices and economic turbulence, the US sent the plea to Iran via diplomats in Pakistan, according to the New York Times. Two officials who had been briefed on the diplomacy told the paper how Trump was ramping up efforts to end the war, now in its fourth week, after it had drawn in several other countries and sent global prices spiralling. In terms of what is inside the plan itself, the two officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, reportedly claimed that it addresses Iran’s ballistic missile and nuclear programs. Meanwhile reports carried on Israel’s Channel 12 news said the US is seeking a month-long ceasefire to discuss the 15-point agreement it had sent to Iran. The plan reportedly requires Iran to agree to stop enriching all uranium and decommission its enrichment plants in Isfahan, Fordow and Nantaz, the broadcaster reported. The peace plan also calls on the Islamic Republic to stop funding proxies in the region. The plan is said to also call for Iran to create a ‘free maritime zone’ in the Strait of Hormuz, the broadcaster said. It is not clear what concessions the US is offering in return. Meanwhile it is still unclear how widely the plan had been shared among Iranian officials and there is currently no word on whether Iran is likely to accept it as a basis for negotiations.
