US gasoline price averaging $4 per gallon: AAA

Summary

According to AAA, the average price was exactly $4 on Monday, a number it had been creeping toward in recent days after the ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran fell apart. That’s up from about $3.87 a week ago. As the ceasefire ended, Iran began firing on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping lane for oil from the Middle East. About a fifth of the world’s oil flows through this channel during peacetime. At the same time, the U.S. said it was imposing a blockade on the strait. Ship traffic through the strait appears to have slowed. According to MarineTraffic.com, crossings of the waterway “remained limited” over the weekend. These developments sent the price of oil, the main component in gasoline, upward in recent weeks. After the now-dissolved ceasefire was announced, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude futures were trading at as low as $67 per barrel, but they are trading at $83 a barrel as of Monday afternoon. The White House says that prices “will plummet back to pre-conflict levels” after the U.S. military curtails Iran’s ability to attack ships in the strait. Read more at TheHill.com.

Saudi Arabia condemned a Houthi announcement of a maritime blockade on its shipping, which the group described as a response to alleged restrictions on Yemen. The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated it would take necessary measures to protect its vessels, amid ongoing Houthi threats to Red Sea routes previously used as alternatives during disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Houthis cited an "eye for an eye" approach in their statement, while prior Houthi actions have affected commercial shipping in the region.

Reports indicate ongoing U.S. and Iranian military strikes in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz, with the Trump administration stating openness to diplomacy while Iran continues to assert control over the shipping corridor. These actions have been linked in some accounts to the collapse of a prior ceasefire, U.

S. troop casualties, and higher gasoline prices. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is set to meet President Trump at the White House amid U.S.-mediated talks between Lebanon and Israel, following a June 26 framework agreement on Israeli withdrawals from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah disarmament.
