Iran threatens 'world's internet' in terrifying 'reminder to the enemy'

Summary

Iran threatens 'world's internet' in terrifying 'reminder to the enemy' The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has hinted at further disruption to global business involving crucial internet cables lying under the Strait of Hormuz Iran has given a chilling warning to the world over crucial internet cables lying under the Strait of Hormuz. The Middle East crisis has centred around the shipping lane and a blockade has seen major disruption to the global supply of oil with tankers unable to pass. Now the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have made a chilling reference to seven vital cables that run across the bottom of the strait. IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebi said: "Seven major cables have passed under the Strait of Hormuz, all of which the world's internet and commercial data depend on; we are reminding them of this so that the enemy knows." And in a separate threat he also posted on X what appeared to be an AI-generated image of a missile, captioned "The world will see what will happen." Iran has previously threatened that it was ready to look at different ways to target the United States and its allies with no peace in sight for the conflict in the Middle East. While Iran has been blockading the strait, the United States has also been preventing ships from entering and leaving the country's ports. This is a Breaking News story. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is prepared to restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if the United States accepts a peace proposal conveyed via Qatar. The plan reportedly requires the US to lift a naval blockade, ease oil export restrictions, and release frozen Iranian assets, while also demanding an end to hostilities in Gaza and Lebanon.

These terms were previously rejected by US President Donald Trump, who characterized them as "unacceptable" and asserted that the US holds a stronger negotiating position.

Experts suggest that Russian strikes on Ukrainian data centers may expose vulnerabilities in Moscow's own IT infrastructure, following Ukrainian retaliatory drone attacks on Yandex, Sberbank, and VK facilities in October. Since a September strike disrupted services for approximately 100,000 Kyiv households, Russia has reportedly expanded its targeting of digital infrastructure, a strategy analysts attribute to stalled battlefield progress in 2026.
