Qatar

Host of the largest US air base in the region (Al Udeid); major LNG exporter; principal regional mediator with Iran, Hamas, and Taliban.

Role in conflict

Qatar combines a US Central Command forward headquarters with the region's most active backchannel diplomacy. Doha mediates with Iran on US-Iran issues, hosts Hamas political leadership, and has been a primary channel on hostage releases and humanitarian access in Gaza. Its diplomatic role is enabled by geography, energy wealth, and a deliberate cultivation of relationships across regional divides.

Objectives

  • Maintain US security guarantee while preserving Iranian channel
  • Become indispensable to multiple sides as a mediator
  • Protect LNG export routes through Hormuz
  • Avoid the GCC isolation experience of 2017–2021

Red lines

  • Direct attack on Al Udeid or Qatari territory

Triggers US response under bilateral defence cooperation framework.

Constraints

  • Small territory and population
  • Energy export geometry depends on Hormuz
