EU plans most far-reaching sanctions against Russia in coming months, Kallas says
- The European Union aims to expand sanctions in the coming months, Kallas says. - Sources say 1 600 new designations are set to be proposed. - Measures are in place to target Moscow’s military-industrial complex. The European Union intends to significantly expand sanctions against Russia in the coming months over its war in Ukraine, the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, told a German newspaper. “EU sanctions have already cost Russia dearly, depriving Russia’s war machine of over €1 trillion, and for autumn I am putting forward the most far-reaching sanctions listings since the start of the war,” she told Die Welt. “Once adopted, they would immediately raise the total number of sanctioned Russian entities by a third. The pressure must keep growing until Moscow ends its war,” said Kallas, who leads the European External Action Service (EEAS) - the EU’s diplomatic service. She did not elaborate on the timing or details of the new designations, but EU diplomatic sources later told Reuters that the EEAS would propose about 1 600 people and entities based in Russia and focused on Moscow’s military-industrial complex. The designations will include travel and transaction bans as well as asset freezes, they added. The EU has already listed nearly 3 000 people and companies. New list set to be presented in September The EEAS is expected to present the new list to EU countries in early September, with the aim of adopting it in October, the sources added. The listings are not expected to be accompanied by sectoral measures - under the European Commission’s purview - as part of an effort to speed up their adoption. Traditional EU packages against Russia, which combine sectoral measures and full designations, have frequently become dogged by lengthy disputes. During negotiations for the latest 21st package, Greece raised an issue over a forthcoming ban on Russian liquefied natural gas transfers. The package was approved in July, imposing curbs on the country’s banking sector and cryptocurrency networks. The EEAS also expects to propose more listings in September on those involved in trafficking Ukrainian children under the framework of human rights violations, and later in the autumn, more designations related to Russia’s hybrid activities, such as cyberattacks and misinformation campaigns.

Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, says Israeli forces should “kill 30 or 40” people in Gaza every night and go beyond “those who pose a danger … at that particular moment”. Ben-Gvir made the comments to Rom Braslavski – a former Israeli captive held in Gaza as Israel waged a genocidal war on the territory after the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023 – in a podcast episode that surfaced on Sunday and was shared widely across Palestinian media. The remarks are the latest in a long record of extreme statements from Ben-Gvir, who sits in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition government and controls Israel’s police and prison services. The far-right minister has gained influence in Israel as the country heads towards elections on October 27. Ben-Gvir told Braslavski that he disagreed with Netanyahu’s decision to scale back military strikes in Gaza under the current “ceasefire”, arguing instead for renewed targeted assassinations that would go beyond people considered active threats. He has no formal authority over the military and cannot order strikes himself, though he sits on Israel’s security cabinet, a group of senior ministers who help shape war and security policy. Ben-Gvir also promised Braslavski that he would seek to allow him to personally take part if prisoners are executed under Israel’s recently enacted death penalty law for Palestinians convicted in military courts of deadly attacks on Israelis. “I have a personal request, and I am truly looking you in the eyes, minister. Let me be the one who hangs them,” Braslavski told Ben-Gvir. “I don’t want a rope; I want a button on a gun. With my own hands, I will execute every terrorist in the state of Israel,” he added. Ben-Gvir replied: “I will turn the world upside down to make that happen. I promise you that I will do everything I can and turn the world upside down until it happens.” In the discussion, Ben-Gvir also called for Palestinians to be encouraged to leave Gaza permanently, alongside new Israeli settlement of the territory, telling Braslavski he saw “all of Gaza as ours”, a comment he has repeated on many occasions. International lawyers have warned that mass, forced or engineered emigration of this kind could amount to ethnic cleansing. Israeli strikes have killed more than 1,250 people in Gaza since the “ceasefire” took hold in October, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. Ben-Gvir’s comments fit a pattern stretching back decades, from his teenage involvement with the outlawed nationalist Kahanist movement. As minister, he has championed the death penalty as a default sentence for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks, and has boasted of deliberately worsening conditions in Israeli prisons holding Palestinian detainees. That record has drawn international criticism, but without serious consequence. He has been sanctioned by the United Kingdom and some European Union states, but this has not had an effect on his actions.

The bottom line looks like the Democrats can take the House, but not the Senate. So, you will have a 50/50 divided government. You are going to get a lot of the crazies on the Democrat side. Even the conservative Democrats are getting very nervous. You recently had (Democrat) James Carville talking about how the party is going to split, which was our forecast in 2024. So, this is where we are heading. By the Dems taking the House, you will see all kinds of investigations, there will be another impeachment of Trump, etc. They will be real obstructionists. They don’t give a crap about the country. If Trump says the sky is blue, they have to say it’s red. This is the way politics degenerated.” The implications for the Democrats will be long lasting and not in a good way. Armstrong says, “If the Democrats take the House, they will basically make this a real shit fight..." "Our computers show for 2028 something very, very interesting. I have never seen it do this, and it’s showing the Democrats will lose dramatically. On the Republican side, it shows they win even slightly above 70%. You take the two favorites from both sides, which would be Vice President Vance against AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez), Vance would blow her out, yes. I think the Democrats need to take the House to show the world how screwed up they really are. There will be a check against them from Trump and the Senate. They can do an impeachment, but the trial has to be in the Senate, and it’s not going to go anywhere. ... It’s going to get much worse before the Midterms. As I said, these people don’t care about the country. This has turned into a bloodsport. This is part of what the computer has been projecting. By 2032, we are looking at the collapse of Republican forms of government.” On the war in Ukraine, Armstrong says, “I am not optimistic. It looks like it goes off the boards by 2030 or so. Even the EU looks like it’s going to collapse after 2029 and break up again.” With the Iran war, Armstrong says, “China is using Iran to drain our resources, which has happened..." " It takes two to three years to replace the missiles. Taiwan is up in arms saying to the US, you don’t have the fire power to protect us. . .. You see the same thing with Russia and Ukraine. They say Russia is weak. They can’t take Ukraine, and Ukraine has seriously weakened Russia. That is what Ukraine is doing. That’s the whole purpose of this, and that was to drain Russia. Iran is doing the same thing to America.” Armstrong says don’t expect the stock market to crash anytime soon as money is flowing into and not out of America. Foreign ministers from several countries condemned Israel’s rejection of a U.S. plan to end the war in Gaza, as well as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s denial of a Palestinian state. In a joint statement issued Sunday, foreign ministers of the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Egypt said these positions “fundamentally undermine collective efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace.” “This rejection confirms that Israel now bears the responsibility for obstructing efforts to achieve peace in Gaza and the rest of the occupied Palestinian territory,” the statement said. Netanyahu made his comments about the 15-point plan for Gaza during a cabinet meeting last Sunday. He said the Israeli military will not withdraw from the enclave until Hamas is disarmed. “And when I say the disarming of Hamas, it means heavy weaponry, lighter weaponry, all weaponry. And we are talking about genuine disarmament, not fictitious disarmament,” Netanyahu said. He added that as long as he is prime minister, “a Palestinian state will not be established.” The Foreign ministers, in their statement Sunday, responded to this by saying a “just, lasting, and comprehensive peace can only be achieved through the implementation of the two-state solution and the establishment of an independent and sovereign Palestinian state.” This Palestinian state, they said, must be “based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with international law and relevant [United Nations] resolutions.” Trump announced the 15-point roadmap for implementing a peace plan in Gaza in July. It includes Gaza being governed by a new Palestinian government. “The agreement will be carried out in carefully structured phases,” Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time. “As disarmament is completed, Israeli forces will withdraw, and the International Stabilization Force will work with a new Palestinian police force to take responsibility for Gaza being safe for its residents and its neighbors.” Jared Kushner meets with Hamas leaders Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, met with Hamas chief Khalil al-Hayya on Sunday, The Associated Press reported, citing a regional official and a Hamas official who both spoke on the condition of anonymity. The meeting, which took place in Egypt, was more than two hours long and also included Egyptian, Qatari and Turkish officials. A source with “direct knowledge” of the talks told Axios Hamas leaders reaffirmed their commitment to disarming. “Kushner told them there is no room for negotiations on the disarmament, but if they show real steps the U.S. will do its best to make sure Israel takes steps of its own,” the source said to Axios. Hamas leaders said they had frustrations about Israel’s strikes on Gaza despite a ceasefire agreement that was announced in October, Axios wrote. These strikes continued Sunday. Reuters wrote at least five Palestinians were injured in a strike that hit a tent encampment. One of the people wounded in a strike on Khan Younis later died from their injuries, medics at Nasser Hospital told Reuters. Several people were hurt in another Israeli airstrike that hit an apartment in the Nuseirat camp in Gaza, medics said, according to Reuters. The Israeli military maintains they were targeting militants. At least 1,252 people in Gaza have been killed in Israeli attacks after the ceasefire was agreed to. More than 73,377 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the Gaza Health Ministry’s records department, told The Associated Press earlier this month at least 7,400 people are still under the rubble of buildings destroyed in Israeli strikes. Most of Gaza’s population of 2.1 million has been displaced. Israel’s restrictions on aid to Gaza have created a humanitarian crisis in the enclave as well. The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over what it says are war crimes and crimes against humanity by Israel. Several human rights organizations and experts have also said Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Israel’s current offensive in Gaza began after the Oct. 7 attack by Hamas-led militants in Israel, where around 1,200 people were killed and 251 more were taken hostage. All living hostages, and the bodies of those who were killed, have since been returned.
