Iran says it attacked US Navy ships after they targeted Iranian tanker

Summary

Iran says it attacked US Navy ships after they targeted Iranian tanker US military says it intercepted and responded to ‘unprovoked’ Iranian attack, stressing that it doesn’t seek escalation. The Iranian military has said it retaliated against United States Navy ships after US forces targeted an oil tanker in Iran’s territorial waters, a major escalation that puts further strain on the fragile truce between Washington and Tehran. Iran’s Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters added on Thursday that the US also violated the ceasefire by carrying out air strikes on civilian areas, including Qeshm Island, “in cooperation with some regional countries” without identifying them. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy said Iranian forces used “various types of ballistic and anti-ship cruise missiles and destructive drones with high-explosive warheads” in response to the US violations of the truce. But the Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US military said it “intercepted unprovoked Iranian attacks” and responded with “self-defence strikes”. “No US assets were struck,” it said. CENTCOM added that it “does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces”. The clashes represent the first military Iranian response to the US blockade of the country’s ports. Over the past weeks, the US military has seized several Iranian vessels and ordered dozens more to turn around. The naval siege has been the spearhead of Trump’s pressure campaign against Iran since the ceasefire came into effect last month. Several Iranian state-affiliated news outlets reported that blasts were heard at the ports of Qeshm Island, Bandar Abbas and the southern coastal city of Minab. Iran’s semi-official news agency Tasnim also cited a senior source as saying that three US Navy destroyers came under Iranian fire and fled towards the Gulf of Oman. The skirmishes come amid reports that Washington and Tehran are in advanced talks to end the war. Earlier this week, Trump ordered an operation to break Iran’s blockade on Hormuz, leading to heightened tensions that pushed the ceasefire to the brink. On Monday, the US said it shot down seven small Iranian drones, and Iran renewed its drone and missile attacks against the United Arab Emirates.

Perspectives

Iranian Official

The Islamic Republic of Iran firmly defended its sovereignty after US Navy ships targeted an Iranian oil tanker inside its territorial waters and carried out airstrikes on civilian areas including Qeshm Island in coordination with regional actors, violating the ceasefire. In response, Iranian forces launched ballistic and anti-ship cruise missiles along with high-explosive drones, inflicting significant damage on the aggressor vessels. Tehran warns that any further foreign aggression will face an immediate and crushing resistance.

Israeli

Iran's IRGC Navy launched an unprovoked barrage of ballistic missiles, anti-ship cruise missiles, and drones against US vessels, exposing Tehran's direct threat to regional maritime routes and its network of proxies that endanger Israel’s survival. This aggression, framed by Tehran as retaliation while violating ceasefires and striking civilian areas, underscores the existential necessity for preemptive defensive action by the US and Israel to neutralize Iran’s expanding military reach and prevent wider encirclement.

Neutral

Iranian military statements claimed that forces attacked US Navy ships after US strikes on an Iranian oil tanker in territorial waters and alleged air strikes on civilian areas including Qeshm Island. The US military said it intercepted and responded to an unprovoked Iranian attack, adding that it does not seek escalation. Iranian sources further asserted the use of missiles and drones caused significant damage to US vessels, claims that remain unverified by independent reporting.

Western

US forces intercepted and neutralized an unprovoked Iranian missile and drone assault on Navy vessels in international waters, achieving precise threat elimination while upholding freedom of navigation. Washington emphasized that the defensive response targeted only military assets and sought no escalation, countering Iranian claims of prior strikes as unsubstantiated pretexts for aggression by the IRGC. This action reinforces deterrence against destabilizing attacks on commercial shipping.

Pro-Peace

The reported US strikes on Iranian territory, including civilian areas on Qeshm Island, risk further endangering non-combatants and worsening humanitarian strains amid fragile regional truces. Iranian retaliation with missiles and drones against US vessels escalates tensions that could disrupt lives and economies far beyond military targets, echoing the heavy civilian tolls seen in prior confrontations. Renewed diplomatic channels, rather than tit-for-tat force, remain essential to de-escalate and protect vulnerable populations.

Global South

Iran defended its sovereignty in territorial waters after US forces targeted an Iranian tanker and struck civilian sites on Qeshm Island with regional partners, triggering a ballistic missile and drone response that damaged US Navy ships. The clash exposes neo-colonial patterns of external powers policing energy routes and violating ceasefires, while multilateral bodies remain sidelined and ineffective. Tehran vowed a crushing reply to any further aggression.

According to the semi-official Mehr News Agency, more than 3,700 cargo trucks are reportedly stalled at Iran’s borders with Turkey and Pakistan, with truckers alleging delays of up to 20 days amidst extreme heat and logistical shortages. Coinciding with a reported nearly 30% decline in non-oil exports to $15 billion, these trade disruptions occur against the backdrop of a US naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and recent cross-border attacks affecting Iraq-Saudi Arabia pipeline operations.

A UN fact-finding mission reported having reasonable grounds to believe U.S. forces conducted strikes on a school in Iran that officials said killed more than 150 people, while also alleging Iranian authorities committed crimes against humanity during recent protests.

The report is being submitted to the UN Human Rights Council, and while U.S. officials stated their operations complied with the law of armed conflict, Iran has rejected allegations of systematic rights violations.
