Big Morning for Retail Earnings: TGT, LOW, TJX & More

Summary

Wednesday, May 20th, 2026 Pre-market futures are up this morning, filling in some holes from Tuesday’s session that closed in the red. Major indexes are fighting back to all-time-high levels (on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq) last week, but are still working off the slide ahead of Monday’s open. The Dow is up +181 points, the S&P 500 is +29, the Nasdaq is +209 points and small-cap Russell 2000 is +17 at this hour. Meanwhile, spot oil prices have relaxed from yesterday, $101 per barrel (/bbl) on WTI and $108/bbl on Brent crude, even as Iran ratchets up its war rhetoric this morning. Iran has reportedly permitted the transit of three dozen ships over the past day out of the Strait of Hormuz, but it’s unclear whether these ships are also passing the U.S. blockade at the Gulf of Oman. Gasoline here at home continues to climb in price per gallon: $4.56 nationwide, up +43% year over year. Big Morning for Retail Earnings: TGT, LOW, TJX & More Target TGT posted impressive Q1 results this morning, beating earnings estimates by 30 cents per share — $1.71, for a +21.4% positive earnings surprise — on $25.44 billion in revenues, up +4% from expectations. The department store major saw its strongest comps in four years. However, the future looks somewhat muted, as higher gasoline prices are already having an impact on its middle-class shopper. Home improvement center Lowe’s LOW also outperformed expectations in its Q1 report this morning, with earnings of $3.03 per share +2.4% higher than the Zacks consensus and revenues of $23.08 billion narrowly surpassing projections by +0.62%, but up nicely from the $20.93 billion in the year-ago quarter. Zacks Strategist Bryan Hayes gives his take on LOW’s earnings here. The TJX Companies TJX — parent of T.J. Maxx, Marshall’s and Home Goods, and with a market cap well over 2x that of Target’s — posted a strong +18% earnings beat to $1.19 per share ($0.92 reported a year ago) on revenues of $14.32 billion outpacing expectations by +2.3%. Shares are up +3.7% on the news, pushing the stock into positive territory year to date. For more on TJX’s earnings, click here. Vans, Timberland and The North Face parent V.F. Corp. VFC is also out with quarterly results ahead of today’s open. Flat earnings for fiscal Q4 beat expectations of -$0.02 (and the year-ago loss per share of -$0.13) on $2.17 billion in revenues, +1.77% higher than estimates. Shares had been up on the news, but are sliding ahead of the open. For more on VFC’s earnings, click here. Perspectives

Iranian Official

In a firm defense of its sovereignty, Iran has enabled the transit of three dozen vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, directly challenging the U.S. blockade in the Gulf of Oman as an act of foreign aggression. This measured resistance underscores Iran's determination to protect its territorial waters and economic lifelines against imperialist interference. Oil prices at $101 WTI and $108 Brent reflect the market impact of such unlawful provocations.

Israeli

Amid escalating existential threats from Iran, the regime's decision to permit limited ship transits through the Strait of Hormuz while ramping up war rhetoric tests U.S. defensive lines in the Gulf of Oman, exposing Tehran's strategy of leveraging proxy networks and maritime chokepoints to choke vital energy routes. This maneuver underscores the necessity of sustained allied defenses to counter Iran's hybrid aggression, which directly imperils Israel's security by fueling economic warfare and regional instability. Rising oil prices reflect the mounting costs of containing these dangers.

Neutral

Market futures rose on May 20, 2026, with the Dow up 181 points, the S&P 500 up 29 points, the Nasdaq up 209 points, and the Russell 2000 up 17 points. Spot oil traded at $101 per barrel for WTI and $108 for Brent amid Iranian statements on regional shipping. Target reported first-quarter earnings of $1.71 per share, 30 cents above estimates, on revenue of $25.44 billion.

Western

Western naval forces are maintaining precision enforcement of the Gulf of Oman blockade to neutralize Iranian threats to strategic energy transit routes, even as Tehran authorizes limited ship movements through the Strait of Hormuz. This containment has eased immediate pressures on oil supplies, with WTI at $101 per barrel supporting pre-market gains across major indexes. Retail earnings beats from Target and Lowe’s underscore economic resilience amid sustained energy costs tied to regional threat mitigation.

Pro-Peace

Escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, including blockades and war rhetoric around the Strait of Hormuz, risk devastating humanitarian fallout for civilians through surging oil prices that have driven U.S. gasoline to $4.56 per gallon. These costs hit middle-class families hardest, as evidenced by retailers like Target noting reduced spending amid higher energy burdens. Diplomatic engagement remains a viable alternative to military posturing that could claim countless lives and destabilize the region.

Global South

Iran’s measured easing of transit through the Strait of Hormuz underscores its sovereign right to manage vital energy corridors long subjected to external pressure, even as a reported U.S. naval presence at the Gulf of Oman functions as a de facto blockade that disrupts non-aligned shipping lanes. These interventions sustain elevated WTI and Brent prices near $101–108 per barrel, driving U.S. gasoline to $4.56 per gallon and transferring the costs of Western geopolitical maneuvering onto Global South economies already strained by imported fuel dependence. Western retailers such as Target may post earnings beats, yet the same price shocks expose the fragility of middle-income consumption under sustained neo-colonial energy coercion.

A Reuters poll of economists conducted July 7-16 shows that most Gulf Cooperation Council economies are now projected to contract more sharply in the current year than estimated three months earlier, with median forecasts indicating declines of 8.1% for Kuwait and Qatar, 5.

1% for Bahrain, and 0.5% for the UAE. Saudi Arabia and Oman remain the only GCC economies expected to expand. The poll links the revisions to reduced export volumes through the Strait of Hormuz, higher freight costs, and weaker investor sentiment, even as oil prices have risen.

The head of the UN’s nuclear agency yesterday signaled that Iranian nuclear enrichment sites would be visited by his inspectors, a key component in the interim deal between the US and Iran to reach an end to their war. The comment by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Rafael Grossi was the firmest yet from the agency, which is viewed as key in determining the status of Iran’s nuclear stockpile.

Since Israel launched a 12-day war on Iran last year, the IAEA has been blocked by Tehran from visiting enrichment sites where the Islamic republic is believed to store enough highly enriched uranium to potentially build as many as 10 nuclear weapons.

“I can understand political statements, they are part of the reality, but the fundamental thing I would like to remind you and draw your attention to is that there has been a memorandum of understanding, signed by both presidents,” Grossi told journalists at a news conference at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant.

The accord “explicitly states that the nuclear activities that are going to be carried out with the regards of the nuclear material facilities will be supervised by the IAEA — in all letters,” he said. “Obviously, to do that, we have to inspect,” Grossi added.

The air force allocated a budget of NT$21.7 billion (US$687 million) from 2022 to 2029 to procure four MQ-9B uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) manufactured by General Atomics along with associated equipment such as ground control stations.
