The former Nationals MP, who defected to One Nation late last year, refused to criticise people hoarding fuel and said Australia should send a Navy vessel to the Middle East to support opening the Strait of Hormuz. “If you are part of a beneficiary of it being resolved, you got to do something for it,” Joyce said, when asked about US President Donald Trump’s call for allies to aid the US. Joyce said Australia should ration fuel on an “even and odd number plates” system. “People are going to get angry about that, no doubt. But it’s better that they’re angry and say you’ve got a plan, then what exactly has happened here,” he said. In a wide-ranging interview on the ABC’s Insiders program, Joyce also called for taxpayer funds to be used to open new oil refineries. There are currently just two in operation in Australia. Six refineries have closed over the past 20 years, two under Labor and four under the Coalition. Looking ahead at the next election, Joyce – who has been touted as a future leader of One Nation when Pauline Hanson retires – said he expected to win 20 seats at the next federal election in 2028, putting him in the box seat to wield power from the crossbench.
